Delta-8: The Dangerous Drug Lurking in Gas Stations

Delta-8, an unregulated synthetic cannabis, is readily available in vape shops and gas stations across the Pittsburgh region. Despite being marketed as less potent than marijuana, its consumption has led to severe adverse reactions, including psychotic episodes, hallucinations, and instances of violence. Health experts express grave concerns, as the drug's manufacturing process is unmonitored, often involving harmful chemicals and toxins.

The lack of regulation poses significant risks, with the FDA tracking over 100 adverse reaction reports. A disturbing incident involved a University of Pittsburgh student who, under the influence of Delta-8, experienced a substance-induced psychosis, leading to a violent attack. His father asserts the drug was the sole cause of his son's uncharacteristic behavior.

While 22 states have restricted or banned Delta-8, Pennsylvania has not yet implemented such measures. Proposed legislation aims to regulate synthetic cannabis, requiring testing and limiting sales to authorized dealers. However, this may come too late for victims of the current crisis, highlighting the urgent need for state-level action.
