Delhi Gears Up for Organ Transplant Revolution
10 Mar
Summary
- Delhi establishes SOTTO to streamline organ allocation and waiting lists.
- The new organization will improve coordination between transplant hospitals.
- Financial and infrastructure support will be provided by the central government.

Delhi is establishing a State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to revolutionize its organ transplantation framework. This initiative aims to streamline several key processes, including organ allocation, waiting list management, and coordination between transplant hospitals and retrieval centers.
The SOTTO will also focus on promoting deceased organ donation and ensuring swift organ transport through green corridors when needed. This organizational change is part of a broader national framework established under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994.
Previously, many organ transplant coordination tasks for Delhi were managed by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO). The establishment of SOTTO will create a dedicated and robust state-level system to handle these critical tasks more effectively.
The central government will support Delhi's SOTTO with financial assistance for its setup and operational costs, including infrastructure and IT systems. Furthermore, government hospitals in Delhi will receive aid to develop their organ retrieval centers and transplant capabilities.
