High Court Pushes Delhi Govt on Rabies Action Plan
9 Sep
Summary
- Court seeks Delhi govt response on rabies elimination action plan.
- MCD and NDMC report on stray dog vaccination and sterilization.
- Action plan aims for India-wide rabies elimination by 2030.

The Delhi High Court is actively overseeing the implementation of a rabies elimination action plan for stray dogs in the national capital. The court has mandated the Delhi government to submit its response regarding the plan's execution.
Additionally, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) are required to present status reports detailing their progress in vaccinating and sterilizing stray dog populations. These municipal bodies have conducted camps, with the MCD reporting 43 dogs sterilized and vaccinated in August and September, while the NDMC reported 28 dogs caught and 615 vaccinated, alongside school awareness programs.
The court's directive stems from a suo motu case initiated following Supreme Court instructions to enhance infrastructure for animal control and ensure compliance with previous directives. An amicus curiae has developed an action plan with the ambitious goal of eliminating dog-mediated rabies across India by 2030. Both MCD and NDMC have committed to continuing their efforts, aiming to make at least one ward in their respective areas rabies-free and ensuring all dogs are vaccinated and sterilized. The next hearing is scheduled for October 5.
