A 24-year-old student from West Bengal has become the first fatality from severe heat-related illness at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital this summer. The student, who had fallen ill while traveling on a train, was admitted to the hospital's emergency department on the night of May 20-21.
Upon admission, the student presented with a dangerously high body temperature exceeding 105°F, vomiting, and other critical symptoms. Doctors immediately initiated cooling treatment in the specialized Heat Stroke Unit, but the patient's condition deteriorated, leading to multiple organ failure. The student passed away on May 25 at 8:50 pm.
While RML Hospital has officially recorded heatstroke as the cause of death, confirmation from the Delhi health department is awaited. Since May 20, the hospital has admitted several other patients with heatstroke symptoms, with most recovering or leaving against medical advice.
One recent case involves a 19-year-old daily-wage worker admitted on Saturday with high fever and heatstroke signs. He received cooling therapy and is currently improving. Heatstroke occurs when the body's temperature regulation fails, with temperatures above 40°C (104°F) risking fatal organ damage.
