Delhi's H1N1 Cases Spike: Know the Warning Signs
2 Sep
Summary
- Delhi sees a sharp increase in H1N1 cases, significantly higher than last year.
- Diabetics face higher risks due to impaired infection-fighting and sugar control.
- Early antiviral treatment and flu vaccines are crucial for at-risk individuals.

H1N1 influenza cases have seen a significant surge in Delhi, with current numbers considerably higher than those reported last year. Medical experts suggest this rise is primarily due to seasonal changes and the prevalence of a familiar, non-virulent strain, advising against widespread panic. However, they caution that a significant concern arises for individuals with diabetes, as fluctuating or poorly managed blood sugar levels can impair the body's ability to combat infections like H1N1. This can lead to a vicious cycle where the illness and high blood sugar worsen each other.
Warning signs for H1N1, particularly crucial for diabetics, include breathing difficulties, chest pain, persistent vomiting, severe weakness, confusion, unusual sleepiness, and difficulty staying awake. High blood sugar levels, especially with ketones present, and symptoms of dehydration are also critical indicators that require immediate medical attention. Diabetics are more prone to H1N1 complications such as lung problems, bronchitis, and sinus infections, which can lead to hospitalization.
Managing diabetes during an H1N1 infection presents unique challenges, with fever and stress potentially raising glucose levels, while reduced appetite can cause dangerously low blood sugar. Early intervention with antiviral medications, such as oseltamivir, is recommended, ideally within 48 hours of symptom onset, though beneficial even for high-risk individuals if started later. Annual flu vaccination is strongly advised for diabetics to reduce the risk of hospitalization and infection severity, alongside other precautions like mask-wearing and maintaining hand hygiene.
