Pub's Generous Act Completes Town-Wide Defibrillator Mission
26 Oct
Summary
- A community campaign successfully installed defibrillators across the town.
- The final device was placed at The Wheatsheaf pub.
- The pub's donation was driven by the landlord's personal experience with heart loss.
Councillor Ian Snowdon has successfully concluded his extensive campaign to ensure life-saving defibrillators are accessible throughout the town. The initiative reached its final milestone with the installation of a defibrillator at The Wheatsheaf pub earlier this month.
The pub's landlords, Bobby and Catherine, proactively offered their establishment as the final site. Their decision was motivated by a poignant family history, as the landlord's father passed away from a heart attack in 2008. They expressed a desire to provide others with a greater chance of survival, turning personal tragedy into a potentially life-saving community asset.
This final installation addresses a long-standing challenge in the Wantage Road area, which previously lacked suitable public buildings for such equipment. The Wheatsheaf's prime, highly visible location on the wall next to the road and a pedestrian crossing makes it an ideal spot. Following the pub's offer, volunteers rapidly responded to a public plea, with funding and installation support secured in just eleven minutes.
