In a poignant tribute, over 200 family and friends recently completed a 10k run to commemorate Debbie Holland, who passed away from cancer last month at the age of 47. Debbie received care at Wakefield Hospice in the final stages of her battle with breast cancer, to which she was diagnosed two years ago.
The fundraising effort organized in her memory has seen remarkable success. A dedicated page set up to sponsor the runners has garnered over ten times its initial £3,000 target, highlighting the profound impact Debbie had on her community.
Debbie's husband, Andrew, ran alongside their two daughters. He expressed deep gratitude for the hospice, stating the staff were "amazing" and deserved recognition for their work. Among the participants was Sarah Sykes, a friend who also has a history of breast cancer, underscoring the shared challenges and the strength of their bond.
Sarah described Debbie as an exceptionally kind person who, despite her own suffering, consistently offered support. The event was organized by Lisa Binks, a close friend who praised the hospice for ensuring Debbie's comfort. Lisa fondly recalled Debbie's tradition of cheering runners on at a challenging point in the course.
