US Sees Massive Outbreak: Parasite in Lettuce Kills Two

A significant outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness causing explosive diarrhea, has seen its case count rise. Recalled iceberg lettuce, originally from a Mexican Taylor Farms facility, may have been distributed in nine additional states and regions, including California, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Nationally, over 10,930 illnesses are now associated with this multi-state outbreak across 17 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 27,000 total cases since May 1 across 47 states.
Michigan has been severely impacted, with two reported deaths and 14,277 cases. Some individuals in Michigan fell ill after dining at Taco Bell, which has since removed the lettuce from its menu.
The parasite Cyclospora, found in human waste, can contaminate produce through irrigation water or handling. While cooking food to 158°F is the best prevention, thorough washing of produce can reduce, but not eliminate, the risk.
