On Tuesday, February 11, 2026, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will observe National De-worming Day by distributing free de-worming pills to children. The Department of Health and Family Welfare is providing Albendazole 400 mg tablets to all children between the ages of 1 and 19 in government, aided, and unaided educational institutions, as well as anganwadis.
A mop-up day is scheduled for February 16, 2026, to ensure that any child who missed the initial distribution receives their medication. This program aims to significantly reduce health problems caused by intestinal worms, such as anemia and malnutrition, which can impede both physical and intellectual development.
In Udupi alone, a total of 272,477 children are slated to receive these free tablets. The department emphasizes that proper hygiene and cleanliness are crucial in preventing worm infestation, advising thorough handwashing and washing of produce before consumption. Symptoms of severe infestation can include stomach pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and fatigue.
