Brighter Days Mean Deeper Sleep, Study Finds
20 Jul
Summary
- Adults with consistent daytime light had healthier sleep cycles.
- Morning light exposure helps regulate sleep-wake cycles.
- Limiting evening light improves sleep quality.

Exposure to brighter, more consistent daylight during the day can lead to better sleep at night, according to recent findings published in NPJ Biological Timing and Sleep. The study, which involved 89 adults and over 500 days of data, found that participants with greater daytime light exposure tended to fall asleep earlier and wake up sooner.
Furthermore, individuals who experienced more consistent light exposure throughout the day exhibited healthier sleep timing and achieved more deep sleep during the initial hours of the night. Sleep experts emphasize that light significantly influences our internal body clock. Morning light, in particular, is crucial for maintaining a regular sleep-wake cycle, promoting earlier sleep onset in the evening.
