1 Nov
Summary
- A young woman died from a rare disease called HLH.
- Doctors initially dismissed her symptoms as the flu.
- Her family is raising awareness and funds for research.
A grieving mother is urging for greater awareness of a rare and life-threatening condition after her daughter tragically passed away. Daisy Catterall, aged 25, succumbed to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in February 2025, a disease her mother, Rachel, had never heard of before.
What began as flu-like symptoms, including swollen glands, escalated rapidly. Doctors initially treated Daisy for a viral infection, but her condition worsened with joint pain and rashes. Her mother recounts the devastating realization that Daisy's own immune system was attacking her body.
Daisy was admitted to the hospital with abnormal blood counts. Despite appearing relatively well initially, her condition deteriorated rapidly after her parents departed for a holiday. Upon their return, Daisy was transferred to critical care, diagnosed with HLH, and placed in an induced coma.
Tragically, Daisy suffered cardiac arrest and passed away on February 22, 2025. Her mother is now determined to raise awareness of HLH, a condition that can be difficult to diagnose and has a high fatality rate if not treated swiftly.
To honor Daisy's memory and passion for travel, her family has raised over £86,000 for University College Hospital. Her ashes are being scattered globally, continuing her adventurous spirit and inspiring others to live life to the fullest.
