Lash Lifts & Extensions: Beauty's Dangerous Risks
26 Mar
Summary
- Eyelash treatments can cause chemical burns and allergic reactions.
- Serious side effects include vision loss and permanent scarring.
- Experts warn of risks like conjunctivitis and lash loss.

Enhancing eyelashes with lifts and extensions, while popular, poses significant health risks, ranging from mild irritation to severe vision impairment. Content creator Taylor McAllister shared her experience in Texas, suspecting chemical burns after a lash lift procedure. She noted intense burning during the treatment, which led to swollen, itchy eyelids covered in scabs.
Laser eye surgeon David Allamby confirms that lash lifts, using 'perming' chemicals, can cause corneal alkali burns and conjunctival erosions if the solution enters the eye. Similarly, eyelash extensions can trigger allergic reactions, as experienced by Samantha Cole in California. Her eyelids became extremely swollen and itchy after getting extensions.
Allamby further highlights that wearing extensions can double the likelihood of watery eyes and natural lash loss. They are also associated with an eight-fold increase in eye discharge and a three-fold higher chance of eyelid oil gland abnormality. The adhesives often contain cyanoacrylates that may emit formaldehyde, a known irritant.
Experts recommend regular breaks from extensions, monitoring for prolonged redness or itching, and ensuring a safe weight-to-lash ratio to prevent damage. They urge individuals to prioritize their health and safety over vanity when considering these popular beauty treatments.
