Millions at Risk as Damp Homes Worsen Winter Illness
19 Mar
Summary
- Persistent wet weather exacerbates damp and mould in homes.
- Nearly a fifth of people with lung conditions struggle to heat homes.
- Opening windows and keeping homes warm can combat mould issues.

This winter poses significant health risks for millions living with lung conditions. Persistent wet weather has created damp and mould-ridden homes, a serious concern for those with asthma and COPD. A recent survey revealed that almost a fifth of individuals with lung issues already find it difficult to keep their homes warm enough.
The damp conditions provide an ideal breeding ground for indoor mould, which is a known trigger for respiratory problems. Exposure can lead to severe breathlessness, flare-ups requiring hospitalization, and even fatal asthma attacks. Experts recommend simple measures like improving ventilation by opening windows and doors, refraining from drying clothes indoors, and ensuring home temperatures reach at least 18C.
Asthma + Lung UK is also urging the government to implement its £15 billion Warm Homes plan to upgrade housing and reduce energy bills. Long-term exposure to mould has been linked to the development of asthma, particularly in children, and other lung conditions like aspergillosis.
