Marijuana has overtaken alcohol and cigarettes as the most frequently used daily substance in the United States. According to the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 21.4 million Americans now use marijuana on a daily or near-daily basis. This figure represents a significant increase, climbing 21% between 2022 and 2025.
The surge in frequent marijuana use is primarily attributed to adults, especially those aged 26 and older. Between 2021 and 2025, daily marijuana use among adults aged 18 and older rose by 22%, from 17.2 million to 20.9 million. In contrast, cigarette and broader tobacco product use has seen a decline, decreasing from 20.1% of Americans in 2021 to 15.9% in 2025.
Despite marijuana's rise in daily use, alcohol remains the most widely consumed substance overall, with 129 million people reporting use in the past month. Experts express concern over the rising THC content in cannabis products, suggesting it poses greater risks to mental performance and judgment. This trend is occurring amidst increased societal acceptance of marijuana, while awareness of its dangers may be overshadowed by increased knowledge of cigarette and alcohol risks.
