Parasite Outbreak Sickens Nine in NH
24 Jul
Summary
- Nine people diagnosed with cyclosporiasis at Cheshire Medical Center.
- Recalled lettuce from Taylor Farms linked to the outbreak.
- Parasite infects produce washed with contaminated water.

New Hampshire health officials have confirmed nine cases of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. These individuals were diagnosed after consuming lettuce at the Cheshire Medical Center cafeteria in Keene. The lettuce in question was part of a recall by Taylor Farms, which is also implicated in a separate, multistate outbreak.
The Cyclospora parasite contaminates produce, typically through contact with human feces, often via irrigation or washing with contaminated water. Ingesting the parasite leads to severe intestinal illness characterized by frequent bowel movements. Health authorities have stopped serving the recalled lettuce at the medical center and are actively investigating any additional connected cases.
To mitigate risks, experts advise thorough hand washing and cooking produce to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 Celsius) to kill the parasite. Federal and state agencies continue to monitor and investigate various clusters of Cyclospora infections nationwide, emphasizing preventative measures in food handling and preparation.
