US Cases of Cyclosporiasis Surge

At least two additional states have been linked to a significant cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to iceberg lettuce, according to an official familiar with the investigation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed cases in Arkansas and Missouri, with a formal response team planned.

This outbreak follows earlier links to nine other states in July. The recalled iceberg lettuce originated from central Mexico and was distributed by Taylor Farms, prompting a recall affecting 27 states.

This year has seen an unprecedented number of cyclosporiasis cases in the U.S., far exceeding the average of approximately 2,800 cases annually since 2016. The C.D.C. has confirmed about 10,400 cases since May 1 and is investigating over 11,500 more.

Michigan health officials reported the first two deaths associated with the outbreak on Monday, both individuals had significant underlying health issues. While cyclosporiasis is not typically fatal, it can cause severe symptoms and is most dangerous for vulnerable populations.
