The U.S. is currently experiencing a widespread outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by contaminated food or water. As of July 13, lab-confirmed cases have climbed to 1,645, affecting 34 states and resulting in 141 hospitalizations. No fatalities have been reported in connection with this outbreak.
Michigan is at the epicenter of the current outbreak, which began on May 1, with Ohio and New York also reporting high case numbers. Health officials are working diligently to identify the source of contamination, investigating foods throughout the supply chain and utilizing genetic sequencing when necessary.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlighted that there's a significant delay, approximately six weeks, between illness onset and case reporting. This means additional infections are anticipated as more data becomes available. The CDC is also reviewing over 5,100 additional cases that await confirmation.
