Produce Peril: Cyclospora Outbreak Concerns
17 Jul
Summary
- Cyclospora cases are surging nationwide, with an unknown source.
- Health officials urge precautions but not avoidance of produce.
- Certain raw produce like raspberries and mangoes pose higher risks.

An alarming surge in cyclosporiasis cases, nearing 7,000 nationwide, has raised public concern about food safety. The exact source of contamination remains elusive, though raw produce, such as lettuce, is suspected. Health authorities are emphasizing that fruits and vegetables are vital for a healthy diet and are not advising complete avoidance.
However, Dr. Sohaib Imtiaz, Chief Medical Officer at PEOPLE Inc., recommends specific precautions. Prewashed bagged salads and pre-cut fruits and vegetables are deemed risky due to potential cross-contamination. Leafy greens, fresh herbs like basil and cilantro, snow peas, raspberries, mangoes, and even onions are highlighted as higher-risk items.
These foods are often eaten raw, have surfaces that can trap the Cyclospora parasite, or are grown in regions with potentially contaminated water sources. Imtiaz suggests that individuals with compromised immune systems or those at high risk for severe illness should opt for cooked, canned, or frozen produce. This approach offers greater peace of mind while ensuring essential nutrient intake.
