Lettuce Linked to Cyclospora Outbreak: 5 States Affected

A growing multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis is now linked to five states, with investigators focusing on shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. Although a previous positive test result for Taylor Farms-branded lettuce was determined to be a false positive, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to identify this type of lettuce as the most likely source.

Indiana has become the fifth state involved, reporting at least 47 cases. Previously, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky were implicated, with thousands of cases reported across these states. Michigan alone has documented over 6,000 cases, with 102 requiring hospitalization. The FDA is actively collecting product samples and collaborating with health partners to ensure implicated products are removed from markets.

Cyclosporiasis symptoms can include severe diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, bloating, fever, and extreme tiredness. Not everyone infected experiences symptoms, and diagnosis requires specific stool sample testing, which medical professionals are being urged to request. Some cases may resolve on their own, but persistent diarrhea warrants medical attention.
