Parasitic Outbreak Spreads: Lettuce Linked to Explosive Diarrhea

An unprecedented wave of cyclosporiasis infections has spread across the United States since May, leading to thousands of reported illnesses and at least two confirmed deaths. As of August 10, the CDC documented 13,895 laboratory-confirmed cases in 47 states, with an additional 10,455 cases awaiting confirmation. Michigan has reported the highest number of cases, with over 13,900 incidents.

The primary source of this outbreak has been traced to recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, which originated in central Mexico. This lettuce was distributed to numerous retailers and food service providers. Walmart, under its Marketside brand, received the largest share, approximately 46% of the recalled lettuce, while Taylor Farms itself received about 29%.

While Taco Bell was initially named in the investigation, it received a small fraction of the recalled product. Other recipients included Subway, Jack in the Box, and various distributors and food service providers. Health officials are also investigating other distinct clusters of cyclosporiasis, though their sources remain unidentified. Tracking these parasitic infections can be challenging due to long incubation periods and limited genetic tracking tools.
