Small Habits Slash Heart Attack Risk by 10%
27 May
Summary
- Small changes can reduce heart attack risk by 10%.
- Sleeping 11 minutes longer daily benefits cardiovascular health.
- Increasing vegetable intake by 50 grams is also beneficial.

Adopting a few small daily habits can lead to a significant reduction in cardiovascular risk, according to recent research. The study suggests that minor adjustments like sleeping slightly longer, increasing physical activity, and improving diet can lower the risk of heart attack or stroke by up to 10%.
The findings, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, are based on data from over 53,000 middle-aged adults. Researchers found that dedicating an extra 11 minutes to sleep, walking briskly for 4.5 minutes more daily, or consuming an additional 50 grams of vegetables can yield measurable health improvements.
Experts highlight that combining these modest changes yields the greatest benefits. While individual adjustments may have limited impact, their collective effect can be substantial. This approach is considered more achievable and sustainable for most individuals compared to attempting major lifestyle transformations.
A particularly beneficial health pattern involves sleeping between eight and nine hours, engaging in at least 42 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity, and maintaining a balanced diet. Such a comprehensive approach could potentially reduce the risk of heart events by as much as 57%.
