Hundreds of employees from Bristol Myers Squibb are undertaking a 3,000-mile cross-country bike ride from Oregon to the Jersey Shore. This initiative, named Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer, aims to raise $1 million for the V Foundation for cancer research.
One participant, Denny Lai from Philadelphia, is pedaling in honor of his grandmother. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and achieved remission within a year due to vigilant medical care. Lai has been training rigorously on local trails, improving his speed significantly over four months.
Lai and his colleagues will cover a 250-mile segment through Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia, concluding in Pennsylvania. He highlighted the challenging elevation gain in Pittsburgh as part of their route. Lai views the ride as a manageable challenge compared to the battles cancer patients endure, and has already raised over $5,000.
The funds generated will be directed towards National Institutes of Health grants. This financial support will empower scientists to conduct vital laboratory research in the quest for a cancer cure.
