A comprehensive study conducted in Qatar, spanning from February 2020 to May 2024, has demonstrated that the 'healthy vaccinee effect' does not introduce bias into COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness estimates.
Researchers observed that vaccine effectiveness against infection and severe, critical, or fatal COVID-19 remained largely unchanged, irrespective of the matching strategies employed. This held true for analyses involving both vaccination and natural infection, suggesting reliable protection measures were consistent.
The study utilized Qatar's integrated digital health platform, encompassing extensive testing, vaccination, hospitalization, and death records. COVID-19 vaccinations were primarily mRNA-based and offered freely through the public healthcare system, with priority given to frontline workers and vulnerable populations.
Three retrospective cohort studies were performed, comparing effectiveness estimates under different matching conditions for coexisting conditions. These analyses aimed to dissect the influence of baseline health status on vaccine performance, concluding that such effects do not compromise the accuracy of vaccine effectiveness data.
