COVID's Hidden Toll: 1 Million Kids Now Obese
8 Dec
Summary
- Childhood obesity rose from 21% to nearly 23% during the pandemic.
- Roughly 1 million American children became obese during the pandemic.
- Minority and disadvantaged youth experienced the most significant weight gain.
Childhood obesity rates in the United States saw a significant increase during the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting roughly 1 million children. Pre-pandemic obesity levels of around 21% climbed to nearly 23% during the global health crisis, as reported in a recent study. This alarming rise poses long-term health risks, including heart disease and diabetes, for affected youth.
The pandemic's impact on weight gain was disproportionately severe for minority children, disadvantaged youth, and those already struggling with their weight. For instance, Black children faced nearly double the risk of severe obesity compared to white children. Adolescents aged 12 to 19, particularly from low-income households, were most affected.
While increased physical activity showed a protective effect, reducing severe obesity risk by 9% to 14%, healthier eating patterns did not appear to significantly counteract weight gain. Factors like increased idle time, emotional stress, and limited access to healthy foods contributed to the escalating crisis.
