COVID Wave Spreads Nationwide: All States See Growth
20 Aug
Summary
- COVID-19 infections are growing in nearly all US states.
- CDC model shows a significant shift from stable pockets to widespread growth.
- Experts advise staying aware, getting boosters, and protecting vulnerable groups.

As of August 12, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates COVID-19 infections are growing or likely growing in 50 states and the District of Columbia. This widespread transmission represents a notable change from late July when numerous states still exhibited stable or declining trends.
The current CDC epidemic modeling indicates that the summer COVID wave, which began in the South and West, has now expanded to become a nationwide phenomenon. Forty-seven states are classified as 'Growing,' with three others noted as 'Likely Growing.' No state is currently showing a decrease in transmission.
Experts suggest this pattern aligns with previous years' late summer and early fall surges, characterizing it as an expected seasonal phase rather than a pandemic-level crisis. They advise continued vigilance, including staying up-to-date with booster shots and considering influenza and RSV vaccines.
While the national trend is upward, infectious disease experts note that widespread infection does not automatically equate to a significant increase in severe illness, given the population's existing immunity. However, they stress the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, immunocompromised, pregnant individuals, and the very young, who remain at higher risk for severe outcomes.
