19 Aug
Summary
- COVID-19 infections are growing in nearly all U.S. states as of mid-August.
- Wastewater testing indicates moderate COVID-19 levels in Hawaii and Mississippi.
- An updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting the XFG variant will be available in fall.

COVID-19 infections are surging nationwide, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicating growth in almost every U.S. state by mid-August. Currently, no states are reporting a decline in cases. Despite this increase, the CDC notes that severe illnesses and hospitalizations related to COVID-19 remain at very low levels.
Wastewater surveillance offers a detailed view of viral circulation, even detecting the virus in asymptomatic individuals. Hawaii and Mississippi are currently showing moderate levels of COVID-19 activity, although data for Mississippi is limited. The West and South regions are experiencing higher rates of COVID activity compared to other areas.
In addition to COVID-19, influenza and RSV levels are being monitored. Both of these viruses are appearing less frequently in wastewater than COVID-19. Public health officials anticipate an updated COVID-19 vaccine, designed to target the prevalent XFG variant, will be available starting this fall.
