COVID-19 or Dengue? Symptoms Overlap & Key Differences
24 Jul
Summary
- COVID-19 and dengue share fever symptoms but differ in respiratory and bleeding signs.
- Dengue spreads via mosquito bites; COVID-19 transmits through respiratory droplets.
- Accurate testing and distinct treatments are crucial for both viral infections.

In Andhra Pradesh, six new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state's active cases to 32. While experts assure no cause for panic regarding a resurgence, acknowledging cyclical patterns in the virus, the current situation highlights the confusion between COVID-19 and dengue, especially during monsoon season.
These viral illnesses often begin with similar symptoms like fever, body aches, and headaches, making early distinction difficult without testing. However, their transmission methods and specific symptoms vary significantly. COVID-19 spreads via respiratory droplets and airborne particles, whereas dengue is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.
Key symptomatic differences include COVID-19's association with respiratory issues like cough and sore throat, while dengue typically presents with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and sometimes bleeding or bruising in severe cases. Proper diagnosis relies on laboratory tests like RT-PCR for COVID-19 and blood tests for dengue, including NS1 antigen or antibody tests.
Treatment approaches are also distinct. Mild COVID-19 cases often resolve with supportive care at home. Dengue treatment focuses on hydration and close monitoring for warning signs, with a caution against certain painkillers that could increase bleeding risk. Preventive measures for both include hygiene practices, mosquito control, and staying updated on vaccinations.
