Coventry Adult Social Care Rated "Good," But Staff Face Pressure
29 May
Summary
- Coventry adult social care received a "good" rating from inspectors.
- Concerns remain regarding waiting times and staff workload pressures.
- Services promoting independence and reducing inequalities were praised.

Adult social care services in Coventry have achieved a "good" rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Inspectors acknowledged the council's collaborative efforts with other organizations to foster independence among residents.
Despite the positive overall rating, the CQC identified specific areas requiring improvement. These include longer waiting times for assessments, gaps in specialist local services, and the increasing pressure on staff workloads. While seven out of nine assessed areas were rated as "good," two areas, equity in experience and outcomes, and care provision, integration, and continuity, were marked for improvement.
The inspection highlighted the authority's commendable work in understanding and addressing barriers faced by diverse communities, aiming to reduce inequalities. Services like the Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub and The Pod received specific praise for their positive impact.
While systems are in place to manage risks and prioritize individuals during waiting periods for reviews and occupational therapy assessments, staff are finding workloads more challenging to manage. Experiences for unpaid carers were mixed, with many not receiving short breaks, though support for contingency planning and emergency access was available. Some residents had to seek services outside the city due to local provision gaps, particularly for specialist needs like those of autistic individuals or those requiring high-level nursing care.
