Couple Habits Matter More Than Happiness for Aging
21 Oct
Summary
- Relationship happiness alone may not dictate biological aging.
- Shared unhealthy routines can negate the health benefits of a good marriage.
- Physical activity, sleep, and diet are key areas for couples to support health.
A happy marriage may not be enough to guarantee healthy biological aging if couples don't also share healthy habits. New research indicates that a partner's daily routines can significantly influence long-term health markers, sometimes more than relationship satisfaction alone.
The study, which examined 107 couples, assessed relationship quality alongside sleep, diet, and physical activity. Researchers measured biological aging using DNA methylation clocks, a cellular aging marker called p16INK4a, and telomere length. While happier relationships showed less cellular aging, this association was moderated by health behaviors.
Unhealthy shared habits, such as frequent ordering of calorie-dense meals or extended sedentary time together, can reinforce negative patterns. Conversely, partners can positively influence each other by encouraging exercise, preparing nutritious meals, and protecting sleep.
Chronological age, the number of years lived, differs from biological aging, which reflects changes in the body's cells and systems. While a happy marriage doesn't directly add or subtract years, the habits couples adopt together are crucial for influencing their biological clocks. Key areas for improvement include making movement a routine, protecting sleep quality, and planning healthy meals collaboratively.
