Low Jab Rates Spark Alarm in County
15 Mar
Summary
- Immunisation rates vary significantly across the county.
- A 95% uptake is needed for community protection.
- Family hubs are crucial for delivering vaccinations.

Councillor Sally Keeble has voiced urgent concerns regarding "shockingly low" immunisation rates among children under five in parts of West Northamptonshire. Data presented to the council indicated substantial discrepancies in vaccination uptake, with rates as high as 93% in Towcester and as low as 50% in the Mounts area. Keeble emphasized that a 95% immunisation rate is critical for community-wide protection against diseases like measles. She highlighted that convenience plays a role in vaccination decisions and advocated for the expansion of family hubs to deliver these vital programmes closer to where they are most needed. The council spokesperson stated that improving childhood immunisation rates is a clear priority, working in collaboration with the Northamptonshire NHS Integrated Care Board and NHS England. The authority is actively promoting drop-in clinics and developing wider communication strategies, particularly in areas with lower uptake, to ensure all children receive the best possible protection against preventable illnesses.
