Two-year-old conjoined twins Hiyab and Wuhbto, born in Ethiopia with a rare condition joining them at the head, have been successfully separated. This groundbreaking surgery, conducted in February of this year, lasted 25 hours and involved a team of nearly 30 medical specialists.
Previously, the girls could only hear each other but not see, a situation posing significant health risks. The twins traveled from Ethiopia to Missouri in 2025 for the procedure. Their parents remained in Ethiopia, with a guardian accompanying the girls.
Surgeons delicately separated shared blood vessels and fused brain areas. The hospital announced the successful outcome, noting that Wuhbto recently had a cranioplasty, with Hiyab to follow. The twins are now undergoing rehabilitation in Maryland Heights, Missouri, with hopes of returning to Ethiopia soon.
