The Democratic Republic of Congo is confronting the fastest Ebola outbreak in history, having received more than 16,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine. These initial doses arrived in the capital, Kinshasa, late on Friday, with 70,000 more expected.
The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which presents diagnostic challenges due to symptoms overlapping with other illnesses. While the Ervebo vaccine is licensed for Ebola and showed past effectiveness, its protection against this specific strain is still being assessed.
As of Friday, the outbreak has seen 5,290 confirmed cases, resulting in 2,516 deaths. The rate of spread is unprecedented and may surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic. Transmission is not yet at its peak, potentially tripling its current rate.
Containment efforts are severely hindered by persistent armed conflict, rebel control of key cities, attacks targeting health workers and facilities, population displacement, and inadequate infrastructure.
