Congo Drivers Fight Ebola Misinformation Caravan
10 Jun
Summary
- Motorcycle drivers led an Ebola awareness caravan in eastern Congo.
- Community skepticism and misinformation hinder outbreak containment.
- A rare Bundibugyo virus causes this Ebola outbreak; vaccine candidates are in development.

In eastern Congo's Ituri province, motorcycle taxi drivers participated in an "Stop Ebola" caravan on Tuesday to counter dangerous misinformation. These drivers are vital in spreading awareness because they transport both sick and healthy individuals, facing community skepticism and denial of the outbreak.
Eastern Congo is the epicenter of this Ebola outbreak, accounting for over 90% of cases, with some recorded in neighboring Uganda. The disease has caused at least 598 confirmed cases and 115 deaths. The community's resistance, fueled by misinformation from some religious groups, has led to attacks on health centers and opposition to vital burial measures.
This outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, unlike previous ones caused by the Zaire virus. While vaccine candidates are in development, with aims for availability by year-end, shortages of essential supplies like water for handwashing also hamper response efforts. Conflict involving armed rebels further complicates access to some communities.
