Congo Ebola Crisis: Joint Venture Speeds Vaccine Doses

In response to a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Hilleman Laboratories is accelerating the manufacturing of an experimental vaccine targeting the rare Bundibugyo strain. This critical effort is bolstered by a significant financial commitment of up to $8.5 million from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
As of July 29, the outbreak has tragically resulted in 3,360 infections and 1,487 fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for effective countermeasures. CEPI is also supporting other vaccine candidates, including one from the University of Oxford utilizing ChAdOx1 technology, and has partnered with Moderna for another.
The specific vaccine Hilleman will produce is a single-dose candidate developed by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, leveraging the same rVSV platform as Merck's approved Ebola vaccine for the Zaire strain. Doses are anticipated to be ready for early-stage clinical testing by the end of the year.
Beyond vaccination, treatment trials are also underway, investigating antibody drugs and antiviral medications. This multi-pronged approach is essential given the outbreak's location in a conflict-affected region with limited resources.
