- Insecurity and displacement are major factors fueling the rapid spread of the virus.

Authorities in eastern Congo are implementing a village-centered approach to confront the escalating Ebola outbreak, as the virus spreads faster than containment measures can keep pace.
The outbreak, declared in mid-May, has now affected 60 health zones. It has resulted in over 6,250 cases and 3,039 deaths, with figures significantly higher than the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak.
Insecurity, displacement, and intense population movements are primary drivers of the virus's rapid transmission. Limited community surveillance and delays in detection contribute to preventable deaths, with a significant percentage occurring outside treatment centers.
Efforts to build trust with communities, especially in conflict-affected Ituri province, are complex. Tracing contacts of infected individuals remains challenging, with only 19% of expected contacts traced so far.
While treatment centers have expanded capacity, experts call for more facilities to manage undetected cases. Challenges include inaccessible health zones, distrust in authorities, and the need for expanded laboratory testing capacity.
Health workers are exhausted by the prolonged crisis. Despite efforts by safe and dignified burial teams, gaps persist, and attacks on these teams have occurred, complicating efforts to prevent further spread through burials.
