Congo Ebola Surges: 2nd Largest Outbreak Looms

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is on the verge of becoming the second-largest recorded epidemic. Recent figures show a surge, with 856 new confirmed infections reported in the past week, pushing the total case count to 3,200. The death toll has nearly doubled over the last two weeks, reaching 1,405.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are significantly hampered by factors such as population movement, ongoing insecurity, artisanal mining, and cross-border trade with neighboring countries. These elements continue to drive the transmission of the virus.

The epidemic is unfolding in eastern provinces previously affected by the 2018-20 crisis. A critical challenge is that approximately 80% of new cases are now being identified outside of established contact tracing lists, complicating containment strategies.

Attacks on health facilities by armed groups, alongside community frustration and mistrust fueled by misinformation, further obstruct case identification and contact tracing. These attacks, including the vandalism of an Ebola treatment center, have forced the UN to deploy a mobile peacekeeping base to ensure continued health worker operations.
