Congo Ebola Crisis: One of Largest Ever Recorded

An escalating Ebola outbreak in Congo has now confirmed over 5,000 cases, positioning it as one of the most significant in recorded history. This severe epidemic is attributed to the Bundibugyo virus, a rare strain lacking approved vaccines or treatments.

As of Sunday, Congo's Ministry of Health reported 5,021 cases, including 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak is the deadliest recorded for the Bundibugyo virus and within Congo itself. Health authorities fear it may eventually eclipse the devastating 2014-2016 West African outbreak, which claimed over 11,000 lives.

Ebola, a disease originating in animals, spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated objects, not typically through the air. Symptoms, appearing two to 21 days post-infection, include fever, fatigue, and headache, potentially progressing to vomiting and bleeding.

The Bundibugyo virus, first identified in Uganda in 2007, is far less common than the Zaire virus responsible for previous major outbreaks. The current epidemic began with its first detected patient in late April in Bunia, Ituri province, an area experiencing insecurity and population movement.

While most cases are concentrated in Ituri, the virus has spread to other regions and briefly crossed into Uganda. Notably, nearly half of all confirmed patients have died, with fatality rates reaching as high as 70% in challenging areas like North Kivu province.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are hampered by difficulties in contact tracing, with a significant percentage of new cases emerging among individuals not being monitored. The World Health Organization has declared it a public health emergency of international concern, urging a coordinated global response while advising against disruptive travel restrictions.
