- Mobile lab aids rapid diagnosis amidst conflict and fear.

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the battle against Ebola has intensified at Lwiro Hospital in South Kivu Province. Health workers there are maintaining maximum alert, even as the outbreak's epicenter remains in Ituri Province. Nationally, there have been 782 confirmed Ebola cases and 181 deaths as of Sunday, with South Kivu reporting three cases and one fatality.
Medical director Rene Mbiye noted two confirmed and two suspected cases in Lwiro, with six patients, including very young children, receiving care. The hospital is implementing strict isolation protocols for these vulnerable patients. The region's ongoing conflict with the M23 rebel group presents significant challenges to humanitarian access and public health coordination.
This instability was highlighted when an Ebola burial team faced an attack, leading to unsafe handling of a body and increased infection risk. To combat the virus effectively, responders are prioritizing safe burials, contact tracing, and early isolation. A mobile molecular biology laboratory has been deployed to expedite diagnosis in the Miti-Murhesa health zone, significantly reducing the time from sample collection to results.
Despite the lower case numbers in South Kivu compared to other affected areas, health officials emphasize the critical need for swift action and adequate resources. Concerns remain about the attention and aid directed towards South Kivu and North Kivu, which are already strained by conflict and displacement.
