Ebola's Devastating Toll on Children in Congo

The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which began in May, is on track to be the worst on record, with over 6,800 confirmed cases and more than 3,310 deaths. An Ebola treatment unit in Butembo, with 30 beds, is completely full, highlighting the overwhelming nature of the crisis. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved antiviral medication or vaccine. This lack of medical options contributes to a high fatality rate, especially among children, who represent one in four cases but one in three deaths.

U.S. pediatrician Dr. Rupa Narra, working with Doctors Without Borders, describes the outbreak as the most devastating she has ever encountered. Her unit has lost eight patients under the age of 5 in a single week. The healthcare team provides supportive care, including IV fluids and oxygen, while also training local Congolese staff. The scarcity of immune individuals to care for infants, coupled with the challenges of protective gear, makes pediatric care particularly difficult. The outbreak's rapid spread is exacerbated by a fragile healthcare system and ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.
