Congo Ebola Outbreak Now Fastest Growing on Record

The Ebola outbreak devastating eastern Congo has now reached seven provinces, local authorities confirmed. This marks the fastest-growing outbreak recorded to date, raising significant international concern.

The governor of Sud-Ubangi province announced that laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the rare Bundibugyo virus, which is responsible for the current epidemic. This development places Sud-Ubangi as the seventh affected province.

As of Wednesday, the official figures indicate 6,942 cases and 3,349 deaths have been reported. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak to be out of control. It is currently on track to exceed the grim toll of the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic, which tragically resulted in over 11,000 fatalities, primarily in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

While Ituri province, the initial epicenter, has seen a recent decrease in new cases and deaths, neighboring North Kivu and Haut-Uele provinces are experiencing sharp increases. The epidemic's spread is exacerbated by extreme conditions, including ongoing insecurity, large-scale displacement of populations, a strike among health workers, and extensive population movements.

The situation is particularly dire in displacement sites, where residents already face extremely precarious living conditions. These factors collectively contribute to the relentless spread of the virus.
