Ebola Outbreak: 100+ Dead in Congo Amidst Conflict
9 Jun
Summary
- Over 100 people have died from Ebola in less than a month.
- Attacks and conflict hinder health worker efforts.
- A rare Bundibugyo virus strain causes the outbreak.

A severe Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has claimed over 100 lives in under a month since being declared on May 15. The outbreak is primarily affecting Ituri province, with cases also reported in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Uganda.
The spread of the disease is exacerbated by significant challenges, including frequent attacks on health workers and skepticism from some residents. These issues, combined with ongoing armed conflict in the region, severely impede containment efforts.
This outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, unlike previous ones in Congo which were due to the Zaire virus. Health measures have disrupted daily life in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, with restrictions on motorbike transport.
Attacks by dozens of rebel groups in eastern Congo have constrained access for response teams, disrupted surveillance, and increased the risk of undetected transmission. The World Health Organization assesses the risk of wider spread in Africa and globally as low.
