Congo Ebola Crisis: Cases Top 8,000 Amidst Health Worker Shortage
28 Sep
Summary
- Over 8,000 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,901 deaths reported.
- Health worker shortage and strikes severely hamper containment efforts.
- Outbreak's spread has surpassed the West Africa regional epidemic.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a critical surge in its Ebola virus outbreak, with confirmed cases now exceeding 8,000 and claiming 3,901 lives as of September 26. The Bundibugyo virus, which has no known treatment or vaccine, has spread across 63 health zones in seven provinces, demonstrating a crude case fatality ratio above 48%.
Compounding the crisis, Congo is experiencing a severe deficit of essential health workers. Stalled or missing payments have triggered multiple strikes among medical personnel, critically hindering containment operations. Tragically, 50 health workers have succumbed to the virus since the outbreak was declared.
Containment efforts face significant obstacles, including ongoing insecurity, widespread displacement, and large-scale population movements. These challenges are amplified by the disease's expanding geographical reach, with some areas seeing improvements while others experience increasing transmission.
The current outbreak's rapid progression has already surpassed the 2014-2016 West Africa regional epidemic in terms of cases within the same timeframe. Health officials are concerned it is on track to exceed the 11,000 fatalities recorded in that previous devastating outbreak.
