Sir Nick Young is hosting a special concert at St Joseph's College in Ipswich to mark the 10th anniversary of his son Alex Young's death. Alex, who was 31 and living in London, took his own life unexpectedly, leaving his family without warning.
The concert aims to raise funds for the suicide prevention charity Papyrus, which reports that suicide is the leading cause of death for young people under 35 in the UK. In 2022, 1,769 individuals in this age group died by suicide, with males accounting for approximately three-quarters of these deaths.
A new musical piece titled 'Carry Me Home', composed by Ben Ponniah, will be performed by the Ipswich Chamber Choir. Ponniah, who discovered he attended primary school with Alex in Ipswich, created the composition after consulting with Alex's family to incorporate elements of his life.
Approximately 350 tickets were sold as of Thursday, with all proceeds designated for Papyrus. Representatives from the charity will also be present at the event, which seeks to raise awareness and provide support for suicide prevention efforts.
