Dentists Performing Hair Transplants: Patient Safety Fears
24 Mar
Summary
- Dermatologists and plastic surgeons express alarm over dental practitioners performing aesthetic procedures.
- Concerns stem from potential patient harm due to inadequate specialized training.
- Madras High Court is reviewing guidelines permitting dental surgeons for cosmetic treatments.

The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) and the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI) have raised significant concerns about patient safety. This follows permissions granted by the Dental Council of India allowing Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) doctors to perform certain aesthetic procedures and hair transplantation. These medical bodies assert that such procedures traditionally fall under the purview of specialists like dermatologists and plastic surgeons who have undergone extensive postgraduate training.
Senior medical professionals highlighted that dermatology and aesthetic procedures demand specialized knowledge and skills. The increase in reported cases of unqualified practitioners causing irreversible harm to patients underscores these worries. Hair transplantation, a growing global business driven by new technology and demand, is particularly cited. Costs for these procedures in India can range significantly, from ₹30 to ₹120 per graft, with total expenses for a session potentially reaching ₹60,000 to ₹300,000.
Legal proceedings have been initiated before the Madras High Court by the Tamil Nadu IADVL branch, challenging guidelines that permit oral and maxillofacial surgeons to conduct aesthetic and hair transplant procedures. On January 21, the court acknowledged a regulatory conflict between the Dental Council of India and the National Medical Commission, directing the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to review the issue and submit a response to ensure regulatory clarity for patient safety. The associations are urging the government to implement comprehensive guidelines and enforce existing regulations to prevent quackery and safeguard public health.
