Loneliness Amidst Crowds: Support Groups Emerge
16 Oct
Summary
- Support groups like Anubandh offer emotional solace for pregnancy loss.
- Loneliness is a growing issue despite social media connectivity.
- Over six lakh babies in India die before their first birthday annually.
National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar emphasized the pervasive issue of loneliness and the difficulty people face in finding empathetic listeners for their grief. She advocated for support groups, such as the newly launched 'Anubandh,' to provide crucial emotional assistance to families coping with pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn. The initiative, established by Umarji Mother and Child Care Hospital, aims to foster empathy and support.
Guest speaker Achyut Godbole discussed how evolving social structures contribute to increasing loneliness. He noted that while industrialization brought personal freedom, it eroded traditional support systems like joint families and close communities. This shift leaves individuals with many social media connections but lacking deep personal support during difficult times, making organized support groups more vital than ever.
Dr. Chinmay Umarji highlighted the need for sensitivity and dignity in caring for women experiencing pregnancy complications and loss. He stated that beyond physical care, these women require emotional companionship and psychological support. Anubandh, part of the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness (PEL) initiative, aims to raise awareness about these emotional needs and support affected families. In India, over six lakh babies die before their first birthday annually, around three lakh are stillborn, and 10-15% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, underscoring the critical need for such support.
