17 Oct
Summary
- Comba residents face health concerns from contaminated wells and sewage discharge.
- The sewage problem has persisted for 15-20 years, worsening over time.
- A social worker urged the minister to inspect affected areas and test water samples.
Residents of Comba are experiencing a worsening health crisis, with contaminated wells and open sewage discharge creating unsanitary conditions. This issue has been ongoing for 15 to 20 years, with local MLA Digambar Kamat having previously promised a resolution ahead of assembly elections. However, residents report that the situation has significantly deteriorated, rendering well water unusable.
Concerns have also been raised about sewage being discharged into the Sal river, particularly at night. Complaints to the sewerage department have reportedly gone unanswered, prompting social worker Prabhav Naik to write to Health and Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane. Naik requested the minister to inspect the affected Comba areas during his visit on Saturday as part of the 'Sarkar Tumchya Daari' initiative.
In his memorandum, Prabhav Naik highlighted repeated sewage leakages and the contamination risk to nearby wells, noting that many residents have already ceased using well water. He also pointed to sewage flowing into drains along the Ring Road, which eventually joins the Sal river, creating unhygienic conditions and potential public health hazards. Naik urged the minister to direct authorities to test water samples from affected wells, identify the source of sewage entering drains, and implement corrective measures.
