5 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Colorectal cancer testing trial extended in Telford.
- Nearly 2,000 patients have participated since December 2024.
- Trial aims for 6,600 participants by June 2026.

Funding has been extended for a pioneering colorectal cancer testing trial underway in Telford. This initiative, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, is being conducted by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) in collaboration with medical technology firm Origin Sciences. The trial is hosted at the Community Diagnostic Centre located in Stafford Park.
Since the study commenced in December 2024, approximately 2,000 patients have actively participated. The trial has now set an ambitious target to reach 6,600 participants by the conclusion of June 2026. This extension signifies a commitment to expanding the reach and impact of this vital research.
The Oricol device, central to the trial, offers a quick and pain-free method for collecting rectal mucus samples. These samples are then rigorously tested for the presence of abnormal cells and significant polyps, facilitating earlier and more accurate detection of colorectal cancer.
