Colorado Sees First West Nile Virus Death of the Year

In a tragic development, a Lafayette adult has died of West Nile virus in Colorado, marking the first such death in the state this year. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Boulder County Public Health have confirmed the cause of death.
The CDPHE has also reported nine human cases of West Nile virus in eight different Colorado counties. Additionally, mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in eight of the 16 counties where they are monitored for the disease.
"This tragic loss underscores the serious nature of this virus and why personal prevention is so vital," said Dr. Ned Calonge, Chief Medical Officer at CDPHE. He emphasized the importance of taking simple steps, such as using repellent and draining standing water, to protect oneself and loved ones from West Nile virus infections.
