Colorado Offers Free Brain Injury Self-Assessment Tool
1 Apr
Summary
- Colorado provides a free online tool to identify brain injury symptoms.
- Nearly half a million Coloradans may be living with undiagnosed brain injuries.
- The tool connects users to resources and coping strategies for brain injury.

An estimated half a million individuals in Colorado are living with brain injuries, a significant number of whom may be unaware of their condition. To address this, the Colorado Department of Human Services, through its MINDSOURCE Brain Injury Network, has introduced the Online Brain Injury Screening and Support System (OBISSS).
This free and confidential tool begins with a questionnaire about head injury history. Positive screenings lead to a symptom assessment, followed by the provision of coping strategies and connections to relevant support resources. OBISSS aims to improve diagnosis and aid those experiencing symptoms like brain fog, memory loss, or emotional changes.
One individual, Jules Bryant, shared her experience of significant memory loss and daily challenges following electroconvulsive therapy in 2019. Despite initial difficulties, she has since developed new passions, written poetry, and found fulfillment in volunteering and leading meditation for others with brain injuries, reporting increased happiness and a stronger sense of purpose.
