Cold Laser Therapy Offers New Hope for Prostate Cancer

A groundbreaking cold laser therapy is emerging as a highly effective treatment for prostate cancer, significantly reducing the risk of debilitating side effects. Australian scientists have reported that this novel approach eradicated tumors in 84% of patients participating in a recent trial.

This focal therapy utilizes high-dose laser light, converted to thermal energy, delivered through ultra-fine needles. The needles precisely target cancerous tumors within the prostate, destroying cancer cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue unharmed. This method offers a promising alternative to conventional treatments like surgery and radiotherapy, which are associated with higher rates of incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

In a study involving 100 patients with stage two or three prostate cancer, researchers observed an 84% success rate in eradicating tumors after a three-month follow-up. While a small percentage of patients reported adverse effects like erectile dysfunction and a decline in urinary function, these rates were substantially lower than those seen with traditional methods.

This innovative treatment is currently being offered in a limited number of NHS hospitals in London and the South-East of England. Despite promising results, health watchdog the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence advises caution until further evidence on its long-term effectiveness is gathered. The development marks a significant advancement in prostate cancer care, prioritizing both cancer control and patient quality of life.
